Whether it be a small kid or an adult, everyone loves to see things which they think are
impossible or call it simply magic! Everyone gets to see magic tricks from a magician but
seeing magic things from mother nature are very rare. This place is of similar kind as told
above. Simply imagine for a few seconds, seeing big objects like a car moving on their own
and that also uphill (not downhill)! I know this sounds crazy, but you gotta believe me, it’s
real ! There is a place in India where you will see things like cars moving uphill, instead of
following the laws of nature and going downhill with the effect of gravity which has a
tendency to pull things downwards. Let’s get to know more about this place
Where can you find it?
Magnetic hill is located on the Leh-Kargil Highway at a distance of about 30 KM for Leh city at an altitude of about 14000 feet.

East of this hill, you will find Sindhu river flowing. The nature and the breathtaking scenes around this place makes this place very beautiful and a tourist attraction point. To experience this wonder of nature, one can just park their car in the box which is marked on the road and soon enough, he/she will observe that their car is moving UPHILL with a speed of about 20 Km/hr. Due to this phenomenon, this road is sometimes abbreviated as Magnetic Road.After observing this, no doubt, anyone will be curious to know the explanation/theory behind this abnormal phenomenon. So let’s have a look at the various theories surrounding this phenomenon! Yes, there is more than one theory to explain this.
Explanation from locals
Firstly, let’s have a look at the most interesting theory. People native to those places believe that the road is a way to reach heaven. They believe that the road was once used to send those people to heaven who did good things/’Karma’ in their life. Those who did not satisfy their karma, were never able to travel along that road to heaven. Let’s move on to the next theories which are much more scientific.
The Magnetic Force Theory
This theory suggests the scientific aspect of the observation. There’s one more theory for why this would be happening, it is known as ‘Magnetic force theory’. It suggests that magnetic fields in the region are really strong. We know that cars do have a lot of iron in their body. And magnetic fields attract them uphill. You might think that this might be the true reason behind it, but let me tell you it isn’t.
It is true that the Indian air force avoided flying over that region because of disturbance caused in the instruments because of the magnetic fields in the Region. But actually this theory has not been proven yet!
The Optical Illusion Theory

When you’ll read this next theory; you’ll be shocked. This next theory is more accepted than that of the magnetic force theory. According to this theory, the Magnetic Hill looks like an upward slope, but in reality, it goes downhill and it is an optical illusion that makes it look like an upslope. So, when you see the vehicle going uphill, it is actually going downhill. It’s hard to believe at first but, when you think more and more about it you’ll realise why this is more accepted than that of the magnetic field theory.
